Every so often, a person comes along that has the ability to take us far away from our regular day to day reality and transport us to a comforting place that is full of hope, love, inspiration, and kindness. That person is Megan Murphy the founder of The Kindness Rocks Project.
The Kindness Rocks Project encourages people to leave rocks that are painted with inspiring messages along the path of life. The mission is that one message at just the right time can change your whole day. You can see just how much impact she's made when you go to Instagram or hashtag #thekindnessrocksproject.
People like Megan inspire us to want to do more, to be more helpful, and use our platform to reach people who need extra motivation and encouragement. We all need it from time to time. It's comforting to know that people out there care and are going through the same trials in life. Thanks to people like Megan, these positive messages are found and shared worldwide.
When we asked Megan if she wouldn't mind answering a few questions for our readers, we were thrilled when she said yes.
Describe what it feels like when you see #thekindnessrocksproject being hashtagged on social media.
When I see people using #thekindnessrocksproject I think of the connection. How one simple idea can create a ripple effect of connection among so many. It is truly amazing how this project has grown from the simple hobby of one into an International kindness movement of so many creative, kind souls.
What does your morning routine look like?
Each morning I typically do this, reply online to people who have reached out to the Project overnight while I sip my morning coffee. I make it my priority to reply or respond to each and every person who reaches out, as I take full responsibility of this project in that it is all about letting people know that they are heard and that they matter. Next, I post a morning rock on social media that inspires or uplifts people to start their day. Then I head out on my daily 6-mile morning beach walk to meditate, contemplate and collect rocks. I stop at the inspirational garden I started and drop a few kindness rocks in it.
What is your favorite inspirational saying to write on a rock and why?
My favorite saying is basically whatever I put on a rock on any given morning because I typically create a message that I need myself and put it out there on social and in the garden. Because true compassion is giving to others what you need for yourself. That is where the healing takes place. So there is no one message, it's simply the message I may need (or someone else may need) in the moment depending on what they have going on in their lives.
Tell us about a special moment that comes to mind.
I would say last summer when I was in Alaska on a cruise and we stopped at a glacier for the day and I found a kindness rock on the trail leading to the glacier. I saw that as a sign that I was on the right path....it was amazing.
For those who don't know, what does LNT mean?
LNT means Leave No Trace. Before painting and leaving rocks, everyone should visit LNT.org to learn more and educate themselves as this is important for our environment.
What is on your desk at this very moment?
My laptop, a pack of "kindness cards", Some paint pens, and a bit of crumbs from snacking while working :)
What else would you like our readers to know about The Kindness Rocks Project?
I would like people to know that TKRP is really about connections rather than rocks. Rocks are simply a catalyst to creating connections with others because someone finds a KR and they pick it up and they relate to the message on it, that hits something inside of them. Maybe it's something that they are going through personally, but it's what happens next when they realize that someone created the rock for them, someone that they may never meet wrote that message. They feel a connection with that person as they feel less alone, as if someone really understands them.
