Using pigments that are made for resin along with mica colorants and final embellishments, you can create stunning resin geodes in any color palette you wish.

When you are making geode resin pieces, be prepared by gathering all of your materials and getting everything organized on your table. This is really helpful because you don't want to be opening drawers looking for things, you'll get resin everywhere.

How To Make A Resin Geode

Step 1 - Prepare A Geode Drawing

Make a sketch of how you want your resin geode piece to look. Figure out the colors and where you want the stones, crystals, glitter, and gold for resin. Then when you are ready to pour, you have a plan.

Resin is a great material for creating beautiful and unique art pieces, but it's important to plan out your design before you start pouring the resin. Otherwise, you may end up with a mess!

For those who are visual learners, this will be super helpful for a quick reference guide.

 

Step 2 - Prepare The Geode Surface

In order to create stunning resin pieces, it's important to use the right surface.

Art palettes and free form geodes are great surfaces for creating geode resin art. They provide a smooth, stable surface that allows you to get creative with your designs. Plus, the finished product will have a professional look.

So if you're looking to create some stunning geode resin art, make sure to use an art palette or a free form geode. It'll make all the difference in the final product.

In this geode resin art tutorial, we are using an 8x10 wooden artboard as our substrate. First, prime the board using a pearl-colored acrylic paint (or the color of your choice).

Give the artboard two coats and let it dry in between coating it. If you use a soft brush, you won't get any brush lines. Once that is dry, then go to the next step.

Step 3 - Tape The Resin Panel

Tape the sides and the back of the panel. This is going to stop the resin from getting onto the sides of your piece and catch any resin drips. You will take the tape off later after it is set, but before it hardens completely.

There are techniques that let the resin go down the sides but for this tutorial, we will be taping the sides and the bottom of the panel.

 

Step 4 - Start Placing Your Geode Pieces

Now you will glue down your geode elements. In this tutorial, we used crushed glass crystals and white rocks.

You can use Mod Podge to glue these down (will dry clear) or you can use resin for this too.

Once everything is dry, go to the next step.

 

Step 5 - Mix The Resin

Time to start mixing up the resin! It's important to mix it properly before pouring it into your mold or onto your surface. If you don't mix the resin properly, you could end up with some problems.

First, if you don't mix the resin properly, you run the risk of creating an uneven finish. If the resin isn't mixed evenly, then it won't cure properly and you could end up with an unfinished look.

Second, if you don't mix the resin properly, you could end up with large air bubbles in your final piece. Air bubbles can ruin the look of your resin piece.

By taking the time to mix the resin properly, you'll end up with a beautiful, professional-looking piece that will last for years to come.

For this 8x10 piece, we mixed up 4oz of resin. Just be sure to follow the instructions on the resin that you are using so that you mix up the right ratio of hardener to resin.

When mixing resin it's best to use reusable silicone mixing cups so that they can be cleaned and reused.

Using pumps like this also helps keep bubbles out of resin.

Step 6 - Separate The Resin For The Colors

In this geode resin tutorial, there are three colors. Pink, Silver, and White. Plus a bit extra for the glitter parts. Separate the resin into three reusable silicone cups.

And then you can start to add in your tints and colorants, no more than 10% colorant to resin ratio for your geode art. Another beautiful color would be metallic paint or mica powder.

With the epoxy resin brand that we are using, there is about a 45-minute window to work with before it starts to cure so there is no rush.

 

Step 7 - Pour The Resin

Now you can pour the resin onto your resin geode according to your sketch. Have fun with this part mixing your colors and designs. For this we poured the white resin on first, then went ahead and mixed up the pink and poured that layer, and then finally mixed the silver and poured that on.

After that was completed, we added glitter here and there as you will see in the video tutorial below.

You can use a heat gun to pop any bubbles and move the resin around creating more unique lines and designs.

 

Step 8 - Draw Geode Lines

If you want your geode resin art to look realistic, it's important to hand draw the lines after the resin has cured. This will give the appearance of real crystals and help create a more three-dimensional look.

You can use a permanent marker to do this or paint them on with paint. Just be sure to go slowly and carefully so you don't accidentally ruin your beautiful creation!

When the piece has been sitting for about 5 hours you can draw on realistic geode lines. Using a paint pen for resin is best for that.

We used a Sharpie oil-based paint pen for our resin geode lines.

Step 9. Remove The Tape

Remove all of the tape before the resin hardens completely. Be careful that you don't touch the resin surface or you will get fingerprints on there. If you are using a free form resin geode form, then you won't have any tape to remove.

10 Tips For Making Geode Resin Art

1. Decide on the size and shape of your geode. You can use a mold or create a free-form design.
